Little Oratory Children’s Prayer Corner Kit Inspires Daily Prayer in Young Hearts
The Little Oratory: Children’s Prayer Corner Kit is a newcomer to the market of Catholic children’s products. The kit is designed for children ages 4-10 to encourage the habit of daily prayer by using traditional means of sacred images, holy water and light. It is an ideal gift for parents, godparents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles seeking to nurture faith in the young ones they love.
The Little Oratory includes a handcrafted and durable icon of the Mother of God, Unfading Flower, as well as a cotton altar cloth, an electric candle, a holy water bottle, and three prayer cards. These cards offer a child-friendly explanation of the icon’s symbols, the traditional prayer tied to the icon, a morning offering prayer, and a space to write personal prayer intentions. Each element of the kit is carefully designed to create a sacred, hands-on prayer experience for children in line with the Montessori pedagogical philosophy.
The idea to create a prayer corner kit for children was sparked after reading David Clayton and Leila Marie Lawler’s book The Little Oratory, a beginner’s guide to praying in the home. However, the original term “Little Oratory” was coined by St John Paul II’s in his catechism (2691) where he references the helpfulness of creating a sacred space in the home.
“We wanted to create something beautiful and accessible that helps children enter into prayer in a more contemplative way,” said Marie-Claire Mahon, founder of Little Oratory. “The Prayer Corner Kit invites kids to build a lifelong habit of creating a sacred space in their home in which to turn to God, while giving adults a simple way to support that journey.
“The icon we use was chosen to appeal to children but maintain its traditional elements in order to wet the appetite for the plethora of sacred art the Church has to offer.”
